HYUGE announcement from @ultabeauty

Is Kylie Jenner going to get to $1 billion??

Kylie Jenner on the cover of Forbes

It surely seems that way.  From The Motley Fool:

Ulta Beauty (NASDAQ:ULTA) recently reported its fiscal second quarter earnings, and while the company’s earnings per share figures beat analyst expectations, management’s guidance for the current quarter underwhelmed, sending shares down mid-single digits after hours.

Until the after-hours conference call with analysts, that is. … Ulta will now be the exclusive retail partner for Kylie Cosmetics, Kylie Jenner’s makeup line, which will be rolling out to all Ulta stores before the holiday season. …

Ulta shares went from roughly a 5% loss after hours to a 6.4% gain the very next day.

Sephora’s crummy rewards program

Glossy posted an article on Sephora’s “upgrade” to its Beauty Insider program.  Whatever, it’s still the crummy program where you accumulate points to obtain samples that you’d otherwise should get for free.

Inside Sephora’s first major Beauty Insider upgrade in 5 years

Screen grab from Glossy

When Sephora, in its munificence, announced a limited time 10% off discount on products, beauty enthusiasts were indignant.   Just before that, Ulta had a 20% off sale, including prestige items.  Also, you earn cash back rewards with Ulta’s loyalty program.

On account of Ulta’s cash back rewards, I first visit Ulta to see if it carries a product.  If it doesn’t, then I go to Sephora.  Bonus: join Ebates for earning additional cash back points.  HT Marcia of Beauty Info Zone.

Revlon to launch Flesh makeup at Ulta

MUA Kevin James Bennett posted this to Twitter:

On Instagram, he adds:

In addition to foundation sticks, Flesh will include highlighters, lipstick, and blush — all created to complement a wide range of skin tones.
Flesh will be available online at Ulta Beauty beginning June 24th, and will be on store shelves in July.

Comments:

  • Will Flesh have staying power?  I’m thinking in particular about the stunning failure of Vital Radiance, a line that Revlon created for women over 50.
  • In the 1990s, Revlon had a line targeted at African-American women: I couldn’t find the name of the line (likewise, I couldn’t find the name of the line for which 1980s teen pop star Tiffany was a model).
  • I’m of two minds when it comes to Linda Wells.
    • Con: As EIC of Allure, she ostensibly approved a hatchet job on Paula Begoun. Wow – talk about duplicity.  The reporter ingratiated herself with Paula.
    • Pro: Allure was apolitical when she was EIC.

The Ordinary may be leaving Sephora for Ulta!

Early this year, I posted that Sephora was stocking The Ordinary.

Exciting news!  The insanely inexpensive skin care line The Ordinary is now available at sephora.com.  I hate using the term “disruptor,” as it has become an hackneyed term, but here it…

Allure reports that it appears that The Ordinary is jumping to Ulta. It may be leaving Sephora for Ulta and European retailer Douglas. According to Instagram, it appears that Deciem has some payment issues with Sephora.

ColourPop is now at Ulta!

After an initial foray into bricks-and-mortar stores at Sephora, ColourPop has arrived at Ulta!  The collection includes liquid lip colors, eye shadows, and highlighters.  You may order ColourPop through ulta.com or select stores.

For the benefit of my readers in the DC metro area, here are the local Ulta stores that carry ColourPop:

IT Cosmetics Hello Lashes disappoints

I was turned off by It Cosmetics after trying its opaque yellow-tinged loose powder Bye Bye Pores, which I described as the most god-awful product that I’ve ever tried.  Marcia at beautyinfozone.com (see 6 beauty sites to follow) likes the product and applies it with a fan brush, which would provide a more diffused application.

Hello Lashes mascara from It Cosmetics

In fact, it was because of the raves of Marcia and Lisa at BIZ that I decided to take a second look at It Cosmetics.  BIZ listed It Cosmetics’ Hello Lashes mascara among its top 10 mascaras and published other articles on Hello Lashes.  What clinched the deal for me was that Paula Begoun’s Beautypedia team named Hello Lashes among its 10 Best Products of 2013:

If you’ve been disappointed in the past about mascaras claiming to make regular lashes look like falsies, then this mascara will change your mind. Hello Lashes doesn’t flake or smudge and is water-resistant, with an innovative brush that can reach all lashes (even those baby lashes on the lower lash line!). The end result is a mascara that exceeds expectations in volume, length, and separation.

Here is how It Cosmetics describes Hello Lashes:

Developed with leading plastic surgeons, Hello Lashes 5-in-1 Treatment Mascara revolutionizes and takes the place of five products–volumizing mascara, conditioning lash primer, lash-enhancing serum, lash tint, and a lash comb/curler! Hello Lashes offers the blackest of black color that lasts and doesn’t flake or fade. The triple-brush lengthens, curls, and separates lashes while the innovative Magic Wand lash ball detailer tip is designed to reach every last inner and outer corner lash. Utilizes technology to infuse a blend of lash-enhancing and conditioning ingredients, including peptides, collagen, proteins, acai, jojoba, green tea, and vitamins A, C, E, and B5. Paraben, fragrance, phthalate, and sulfate free. Made in the USA.

I have to say that I was disappointed with Hello Lashes. As a volumizing mascara, Hello Lashes doesn’t compare to L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Mascara, which is still my favorite volumizing mascara. BTW makeup artist Sam Fine recommends L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Mascara as a less expensive alternative to Chanel.

You may buy Hello Lashes for USD $24.00 through the It Cosmetics website.   One thing that I do like about shopping the It Cosmetics website is that there is a relatively low threshold (USD $25.00) for free shipping, so you might want to add another product to qualify for free shipping.  Hello Lashes is also available from www.aswechange.com (for the menopausal :-), qvc.combeauty.com (no affiliate links), ulta.com, and select Ulta stores.

Napoleon Perdis is going upscale!

In a surprising move, Napoleon Perdis is going upscale with his self-named line (not to be confused with his NP Set line that is exclusive to Target).  The Napoleon Perdis line is carried by Ulta and Dillard’s.  More recently, Nordstrom has picked up his line.

Now comes news that Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus have picked up his line.   His first limited edition collection exclusive for BG/NM (really, one company) is the Swan Lake collection, inspired by his collaboration with the Australian Ballet:
