William Schallert, 93, Dies; Prolific Actor Was Father on ‘The Patty Duke Show’ HT @nytimes

William Schallert died on May 8, soon after Patty Duke died. He played her father on her eponymous  TV show.

Before that, he played Dobie Gillis’s teacher Mr. Pomfritt on The Many Loves of the Dobie Gillis.

Patty Duke and William Schallert

In both roles, Mr. Schallert played wise paternal figures, the kind that you don’t see anymore.

For me, his death marked the end of an era.  I enjoyed watching old TV shows in syndication and then on Nick at Nite and TV Land, as they are quaint, charming, and dare I say, funnier that what you find today.  You didn’t have to feel embarrassed about laughing at sexual innuendo or more blatant sex jokes.

For a time Mr. Schallert seemed to be everywhere on TV, usually as an authority figure, as he was in the popular “Tribbles” episode of “Star Trek.”
